The Right Words
Teaching the Post-16 to Spell
by Dr David Armstrong
Poor
spelling can be one of the most damaging and disabling problems for people
of all ages. For those at college, in training or study it is particularly
a problem. This is because our education and training system heavily
relies on good literacy: bad literacy can be a barrier to achievement in
education and progress in employment.
THE RIGHT WORDS: Teaching the Post-16 to Spell
explains why and demonstrates how the tutor/trainer can help learners to
beat poor spelling. In an accessible step-by-step way it takes the reader
through the process of identifying a problem, dealing with the problem and
reviewing progress.
Advice is
given on identifying spelling weaknesses and a range of possible
approaches are described and evaluated. To make this book more meaningful
Jill and Tony, two case-study students, are followed through this process.
Throughout
the publication close reference is made to the
National Adult Literacy Core Curriculum, so teachers can be confident that their work with the
student meets the required standards. Guidance is also given as to how to
use and understand the Literacy Core Curriculum and perspectives offered
on some of the wider issues around teaching Literacy to those over 16.
THE
RIGHT WORDS: Teaching the Post-16 to Spell
is a clear guide for those new to the topic but will also
be an invaluable reference book for
experienced teachers of literacy. It is particularly relevant to all those
who now teach literacy in a post-16 context including Adult Education,
Prisons and Probation, FE (and even HE foundation),
the Careers Service (Connexions) and Private Training Providers.
It will also be extremely useful to those in English and Literacy
Teacher Training.
